Miller Graves, a Nashville, Tennessee native, received a BFA from the University of Georgia in 1989. Through study abroad and internship opportunities, Miller was introduced to the vast world of contemporary and classical art history and architecture. These experiences laid the foundation for a deeper awareness of the built world around her and the way beautiful materials and utilitarian necessity have been so cleverly intertwined to create shelter.
It was the love of the outdoors that led Miller to live in the U.S. Virgin Islands from 1991 to 2002. There, life was defined by the natural world in every way. On the island, she lived and sailed on old wooden boats, worked in the building trades on many custom homes sites, and co-designed and built a traditional mortise and tenon “timber frame” home. This beautiful but harsh environment honed her knowledge of thoughtful planning and construction techniques, as well as steep slope excavation, and the value of ingenuity and hard work to get the job done.
Miller moved to Asheville in the summer of 2002 where she engaged with various architectural firms as a designer and drafter. With the 2008 downturn came the opportunity to become an independent designer. Through referrals from builders, real estate agents, architects and previous clients, Miller has designed more than 40 custom homes and many more renovations and additions for hundreds of satisfied clients.
